The Not So Delicate, Ethereal Orchid~ 38 Impressive Images
The not so delicate, ethereal orchid, of which there are over 25,000 species, can be found everywhere in the world except Antarctica. Their beautiful showy flowers come in every color you can think of with the exceptions of black and blue.
Some types do very well in a garden setting while others fair much better as houseplants, and some varieties are even hard to grow in a greenhouse environment.
Orchids that you see for sale in the produce section of a grocery store, or at home improvement stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot usually are quite odorless with very little scent. There are varieties though for sale via specialty retailers that have various and very discernible scents such as lemon and coconut.
Phalaenopsis orchids are generally very easy to grow if you’re thinking about trying your hand. A sunlit windowsill and water when the planting mix begins to dry out; fertilizer, and changing the planting mix after the bloom is gone is about all there is to cultivating this orchid, also known as the “moth” orchid.
Orchids are of course one of the most favorite flowers for corsages, and can be seen decorating the wrists of many a prom attendee.
It is said that with good care and regular maintenance, orchids can last a lifetime, and live 100 years or more. I’ve had several orchid plants over the years, and I’ve never been able to get one to last more than a month. I think after writing this though I’ll give it another try because I really love them. Their flowers, I think, are the prettiest of any flowering plant.
